What if one Team member does not agree with the process? (eg, to do “scrum”)

January 20, 2023

For our work, we have 2 associated concepts. The Group and the group’s procedure. (Yes, there are numerous other concepts, concepts, worths too.)

The Group

Many people, I believe, like dealing with a respectable group. Frequently rather a lot.

Obviously, not every group is great.

Some individuals require a change time. See the Tuckman design: forming, storming, norming, carrying out, and so on. However let’s simply state a great deal of individuals require to be familiar with others prior to they choose whether they like this Group.

Some individuals will like most Groups, however can likewise a bit particular. They may state “Group X is not my cup of tea, I ‘d choose Group Y”.

And we have some individuals who will never ever wish to operate in any group. Although in the beginning, the individual might not understand that. So, you might need to offer him or her a shot, and find later on they desire out.

In Scrum, we require a method to handle these 2 circumstances. Individuals who (a) do not wish to remain in simply this group, and (b) individuals who find they “wish to be alone” (to utilize the Greta Garbo quote). That is, they wish to be a private factor.

The Process

By “procedure” I suggest a mix of A + B + C (listed below).

A. The bare structure

The bare structure of Scrum is specified in the Scrum Guide, as “the guidelines of the video game”.

Essentially all “scrum” groups do refrain from doing whatever specified in the Scrum Guide.

B. Extra basic Scrum patterns

A great deal of basic Scrum patterns are well-agreed by the majority of the neighborhood however are not in the Scrum Guide.

We would hope that a normal group does all or most or much of these.

A couple of fast examples: user stories, story points, DOR, a Scrum Board and an Obstacle List.

See A Scrum Book by Sutherland, Coplien at al.

C. Extra “lean-agile” things

I believe every Scrum group includes a great deal of other things (concepts, worths, procedures, tools, task help, and so on).

We most likely might argue whether a few of these prevail “scrum” things.

And whether they must be contributed to Scrum.

However Scrum consists of the concept that Scrum is insufficient, and other things MUST be included.

Ex: Some XP practices (set shows, TDD, and so on). (Typically advised by Scrum coaches for software application groups.)

Practical circumstance

In this context, I am utilizing the basic word “procedure” to suggest all of these things (A + B + C above).

The way-of-working that a group settles into. Knowingly mainly and perhaps partly or considerably without believing.

Odd individuals

Initially, I advise that every group attempt to specify the procedure they are utilizing now. As finest they can. And accept utilize that together to be effective.

Yes, speaking about it is hard. A lot boils down to how we will utilize it, if it truly works, and so on

However a minimum of in the meantime, let’s settle on what “procedure” we will utilize.

And, relatively typically, several individuals in the group is not pleased.

However to be a genuine group, the group needs to (practically) accept utilize the very same procedure. To play the very same video game.

Yes, in the United States we have the concept of minority rights.

However our groups are service systems. Everyone has a right to leave a group at any time. (And likewise the right to ask to sign up with.) And similarly, at some time, if 5 or 6 individuals settle on a procedure, and 1 or 2 individuals do not, then at some time the 1 or 2 needs to leave.

Now, the odd one( s) may leave and sign up with another group. Or work as private factors outside the group.

Likewise: great individuals are difficult to discover. So, the business and the (primary) staff member have likewise an obligation to perhaps change some or a minimum of attempt to persuade the doubtful or resistant to get rid of that and sign up with to Process X (perhaps after modified).

However for choosing the procedure, I believe eventually you have bulk guideline in the Group. (I highly think in the Expense of Rights for private and minority rights. However that’s for mostly “non-business” circumstances.)

Developed Equal?

Hmm. In Scrum we desire all staff member to deal with the other staff member mainly similarly.

Let’s not go too far. There should be some acknowledgment, as we move from thing to thing, that some individuals understand more about thing A or thing B.

Some are smarter about specific things.

So, I advise for practically whatever, each staff member gets to voice his/her viewpoint. However typically it is great if one staff member chooses. Purchasing the Item Stockpile is one example. We are not having a bulk vote. The PO chooses (relatively rapidly).

And a smart group, when it discovers a minority with another viewpoint about a Thing, the Group will be smart often to listen to the minority viewpoint for a while. And possibly even eventually concur with it. Once again: one example is the PO and the Item Stockpile. The PO (possibly typically a minority in the Group) chooses. On the large range of other matters: the Group must listen to the minority. And sometimes let themselves be swayed.

However the worst choice is no choice.

Too short, however I believe many people can check out in between the lines.
